Orlando Area Nature Tour,
Day 3
Back to Kennedy Space Center
Canaveral National Seashore Let’s hit the beach.
And, you’re not going to just any beach. No high-rises flank these unspoiled shores.
Although there could be a shortcut open, exit the way you came into the Kennedy Space Center and continue to Interstate 95.
Go north on I-95.
At the State Highway 44 exit, drive east into New Smyrna Beach.
Often overrun by Orlando area visitors, and with its population growing, the charm of this old beach town becomes harder to notice every year.
When you reach the beach area, go south on the shore drive (flanked by beach side condos), and enter the northern section of Canaveral National Seashore.
At Canaveral, you'll find the first (and last) truly natural beaches on this trip, as well as nature walks through the dunes. Check out the Internet site for more information about this terrific national park.
This shoreline is not scenically spectacular—please don't expect that—but you'll see this coast as the native people and European explorers first did.
As mentioned in the last section, the southern section of the park, accessible via Titusville Fl, offers similar pleasures, but is more subject to closures due to NASA rocket launches and security concerns, as is the adjacent wildlife refuge. This northern section, however, stays open.
After visiting the national seashore, you can either return directly to Orlando or travel back via Cocoa Beach, which can be fun.
»»To return to Orlando now, avoid the often very congested Interstate 4. Instead, return to I-95, and then go south. At exit 78, head west on State Highway 407, which runs into the “Bee Line” toll road. Continue west on the Bee Line, State Highway 528, toward Orlando.
