Avoid paying full price for your hotels

Tips for getting a cheap hotel in England

Whether you want a deluxe English hotel or a more modest one, you don't have to pay full price.

We start with discount hotels in London and then then have tips for all of England:

  • Hotwire.com—You select price and quality, but not a specific hotel prior to paying—for savings of up to 75% off.

You have a choice of nine hotel locations in London:
    • Bloomsbury - Marble Arch
    • Kensington - Earls Court - Knightsbridge
    • Mayfair - Soho (excellent for first-time visitors)
    • Notting Hill - Bayswater
    • Regents Park - Baker Street
    • South Bank
    • The City - Financial District
    • Westminster (excellent for first-time visitors)
    • London Heathrow International Airport LHR

Hotel quality ranges from 1 to 5 stars. Check Hotels.com for examples of hotels rated at each star level.

  • Priceline.com Hotels—You choose price, quality, and neighborhood, but don't learn the name of your hotel until you pay.

To find out typical hotels uses at each star level, check Priceline's London airfare + hotel packages:
    • click on Priceline.com Vacations
    • enter any U.S. departure city
    • enter "London, England" or use the pull down menu, and
    • enter any future date

  • For your best Priceline bid,

    • Bid on one neighborhood at a time.

If your first bid fails, you can then re-bid immediately for the same hotel star level if you add another neighborhood (or change dates).

    • Start your bidding with a higher star quality rank.

    • If your first bid fails, immediately bid for the next lowest star level if you don't want to add a neighborhood or change dates.

    • In London, bid 15 - 20% lower than the Hotwire cost for the same star level.

    • In the other English cities listed below, bid an average of 40% below the Hotels.com price for the same star level.

Increase this slightly for 4-star hotels, but decrease this for any star level if you notice few vacancies on Hotels.com.

NOTE: If you mistakenly begin bidding at a low star level, Priceline considers that you have bid for that level and all above it. As a result, you must wait 72 hours to make a follow up bid.

If you need help choosing an ideal hotel location, see our detailed London neighborhood descriptions.
