Fisherman's Wharf

We like the Fisherman's Wharf area.

San Franciscans dismiss it as far too touristy and they are right, but choosing a hotel at Fisherman's Wharf puts you in one of the nicest areas of the city. It's specially suitable for families.

The throngs of visitors who jam the area throughout the day and evening also make Fisherman's Wharf one of the safer areas of San Francisco.

This neighborhood offers

  • Remarkable views of San Francisco Bay toward the Golden Gate Bridge
  • An uplifting and fun environment
  • A good selection of first class hotels
  • A somewhat more car friendly setting than downtown
  • Excellent access to San Francisco by public transportation

Convenience to sightseeing

Most visitors can easily walk to the North Beach/Little Italy neighborhood for some of city's best moderate cost restaurants. Locals eat at these far more than they do at Fisherman’s Wharf.

For the most scenic cable car route to downtown, walk west on Bay from your hotel to Aquatic Park, and then take the Hyde Street line.

For awesome views, use Muni line 39 from the Waterfront Park area at Pier 39 to Colt Tower on top of Telegraph Hill, and then (during the day) walk back via Washington Square through the picturesque North Beach Area. You can also continue along a short distance to Chinatown on Columbus Avenue. Turn south at Grant, or go a half block further along Columbus to the famed City Lights Bookstore.

From Fisherman's Wharf, you also can take an historic "F" line streetcar along the waterfront to the Ferry Building and on to downtown by the same streetcar. This uses restored streetcars from around the world.

From the Ferry Building, Golden Gate Ferry offers low-cost cruises to Sausalito, with fine views of the San Francisco skyline and bridges. These are less costly than regular harbor cruises. Avoid this trip in fog.

The downside?

The popularity of Fisherman's Wharf may not allow you to get as large a discount on your accommodation—even when bidding—as you might find elsewhere in San Francisco.

Even so, your savings by "naming your own price" on a first class hotel such as the Hyatt, Marriott, or Sheraton at Fisherman's Wharf can be significant.
