Hotwire Alternative Airport Tips

When available, always check alternative airports for the lowest Hotwire.comLink to Hotwire.com airfares.

Budget airlines use alternative airports, which brings the fares of all airlines at these down—and this means money in your pocket.

Some airports, such as Midway for Chicago, Hobby for Houston, and Oakland for San Francisco, may be just as convenient for you, while others, like Jacksonville for Orlando, work best with a rental car.

During peaks times like spring break, Jacksonville, FL gives excellent access to Orlando and Daytona Beach, as does Ontario, CA to Disneyland and Palm Springs.

From Jacksonville, you’ll have an easy Interstate drive to Orlando, or you can stop and explore the beaches of the Palm Coast or the natural springs of Ocala National Forest along the way, as well as the Kennedy Space Center.

  • Boston — Manchester, NH (MHT), Providence (PVD)
  • Cedar Rapids and Iowa City — Moline (MLI)
  • Charleston, SC — Savanna (SAV – often much cheaper)
  • Chicago — Midway (MDW)
  • Colorado Springs — Denver (DEN)
  • Dallas/Fort Worth — Love Field (DAL)
  • Fort Lauderdale — Miami (MIA), West Palm Beach (PBI)
  • Houston — Hobby (HOU)

  • Madison, WI — Milwaukee (MKE), Chicago O’Hare (ORD)
  • Miami — Fort Lauderdale (FLL)
  • Monterey and Carmel — San Jose (SJU – usually much cheaper)
  • Napa Valley — Oakland (OAK), Sacramento (SMF), instead of SFO
  • New York City — See below
  • Orlando — Daytona Beach (DAB), Jacksonville (JAX), Melbourne (MLB), and Tampa (TPA)
  • Orange County (Disneyland) — Long Beach (LGB), Ontario (ONT)
  • Palm Springs — Ontario (ONT)
  • San Antonio — Austin (AUS)

  • Toronto — Buffalo (BUF), Hamilton, ON (YHM)
  • Tucson — Phoenix (PHX)

For New York City, LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is closer to Midtown Manhattan, but Newark (EWR) and JFK airports are usually cheaper.  The cheapest airport near NYC for your trip may be Long Island Airport (ISP), but you’ll need to weigh the pros and cons of the time-consuming transfers in this urban area.

Alternative airports work around the world. For example, London has four busy airports: well-known Gatwick (LGW) and Heathrow (LHR), but also Luton (LTN), and Stansted (STN).
