In Loving Memory of Billie Frank

I am so very sorry to report the passing of Billie Frank, whom I loved and whose blog posts were adored by so many BidOnTravel.com blog readers.

An online business can be a strange place. You work with people—in the case of BidonTravel as far as far away as New Zealand--that you seldom see in person.
Nevertheless, bonds become strong. That’s the relationship I had with Billie and her partner Steve Collins.

Billie lived a full and wonderful life but death came too soon.

Although born in New York City, she found Colorado and New Mexico the places she and her partner Steve most wanted to spend their lives.

Once there, they thrived.

“We spontaneously decided one day in the mid-80’s we wanted to live in the Southwest. [When we finally made it] I was sitting on top of Puye Cliffs [site of an abandoned pueblo north of Santa Fe] one day and felt like I’d come home.” – Billie Frank

“I first came to Santa Fe when I was 12 . . . I was intrigued by the exotic character of the city and continued to be from then on.” – Steve Collins

Steve became an executive and personal chef and wrote several cookbooks, including “Grilling and Smoking with The Home Chef,” winner of a National Barbecue Association Award of Excellence.

Billie’s career centered around writing and helping others love and appreciate New Mexico and Colorado as much as she did.

Billie’s knowledge of the area and dedication to service led her to became a concierge at two AAA Four Diamond hotels in Santa Fe, including a former Conde Nast Traveler Gold List winner and one of its "100 Best New Hotels in the World." Later Billie and Steve organized personal itineraries for travelers coming to Santa Fe and made sure that their visits were filled with pleasure during their stays. Steve became a member of the Santa Fe Guides Association.

Billie’s work ethic was incredible. Loving what she was did she put her heart into every post. What she did not already know was meticulously researched. Steve contributed his wonderful photos.

They and I shared many of the same passions.

The U.S. Southwest is one of my favorite places in the world. We all loved its cuisine and history.

We both had a keen interest in Fred Harvey, who did so much to bring quality and dependable traveler infrastructure to the Southwest with his atmospheric hotels and fine dining.

Billie’s last post “Following the Fred Harvey Trail” was placed on the blog in August. Please notice that I did not say finished. Billie monitored her writing to make sure that it was up to date.

I will miss Billie very much. I know that she led a life of love and dedication to others.

May God bless her and Steve and make Steve as comfortable as possible at this time.
