South Jersey Shore - Visitor Tips

South Jersey Shore bed and breakfast in Cape May New Jersey

Cape May, The Wildwoods, Avalon and Stone Harbor

Cape May, the Wildwoods, and the surrounding South Jersey coastal islands offer an excellent vacation get-away for all ages. Here’s why:

The Wildwoods

Beaches

The seven miles of beach that stretch from North Wildwood to Wildwood Crest are some of the best on the Jersey shore. They are free to use, clean, generally safe, not overcrowded, and they have better surf than many of the other area beaches.

Food

The Wildwoods area has a tremendous concentration of pizza and ice cream places.

Mack's Pizza is arguably the most delicious pizza anywhere, but there are probably one hundred vendors to choose from. Other popular food items include Philly favorites like hoagies and cheese steaks. The Wildwoods also offer plenty of seafood and other fine dining. And don't visit Wildwood without stopping at Douglas Fudge for some dessert. The molasses paddles are highly recommended!

Attractions

The biggest and brightest of the Wildwood attractions is the famous Wildwood Boardwalk. It includes three large amusement piers offering kiddy rides, family rides, world-class roller coasters and thrill rides.

The entire boardwalk is lined with eating places, shopping (many t-shirt shops), and carnival games. Other popular Wildwood attractions include boating, adventure golf, nightlife, etc.

Above: No resort area of the world has the same atmosphere of the South Jersey Shore. The video above shows how its flavor has been changing, but it remains quintessential and wonderful to experience.

For more info about amusements visit Morey's Piers.

Cape May

The quiet town of Cape May, just south of the Wildwoods, is a historic gem.

It was home to the first boardwalk in the U.S., and contains one of the largest concentrations of Victorian architecture in the country. These historic buildings have been beautifully preserved and maintained—many of them converted to bed & breakfasts.

Horse drawn tours of the downtown area are available day and night, but walking exploration is sufficient. Cape May also offers many fine dining restaurants, shopping, and art galleries. On a clear day don't miss the sunset at Cape May's Sunset Beach.

Another great activity is the Cape May - Lewes Ferry (Lewis to some!) across the Delaware Bay. The ferry is perfect for walk-on passengers—for a picnic afloat, or on the Delaware side, just for a ride.

Lewes on the Delaware side of the bay is a pretty little town with interesting museums, nice shops and good food. Check www.capemaylewesferry.com for schedules.

Accommodation

You may find hotels in Cape May and the Wildwood area expensive in season. However, you can get discounts using

Avalon & Stone Harbor

Just north of the Wildwoods are the towns of Avalon and Stone Harbor. This island location offers a quieter, less commercial, resort atmosphere. A slow drive along the beach block and dunes will provide an entertaining view of the many million-dollar beach houses here.

Springer’s Ice Cream is an absolute must-visit if you’re on this island.

Beware that the line for this delicious homemade ice cream can be a block long during the evenings. One tip for enjoying this treat faster: go around the left side and sign up for sit-down service at the back. You’ll get in much more quickly and you’ll get to give your feet a break while you enjoy your ice cream in the cool air conditioning.

Atlantic City

This East Coast’s gambling destination is only a one-hour drive north from Wildwood. It’s a great place to visit on a cool or wet day, or when you just need a break from the beach.

Note from BidOnTravel: A huge thank you to Benek for these wonderful tips. He and his parents and brother and sister spent their summers in the Wildwoods on the South Jersey Shore and it's in their DNA.
